Elementary Program
Our elementary program (kindergarten through grade six) is designed to engage students as active learners and good citizens. Our project-centered approach involves pupils in their own learning. Students gain a solid foundation in the core subjects of language arts, reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. Additionally, they have numerous opportunities to integrate their learning across the disciplines. They incorporate their own interests and skills into their work, and they learn from each other in the process. Planning, decision-making, problem-solving, and finally implementing their ideas all nurture critical thinking skills. Learning often takes place through small-group instruction. Integrated units, projects, learning centers, hands-on discovery, field trips, and individual study enrich the curriculum and foster creativity. Cooperative learning activities and independent study allow students to be actively involved in their learning. Children are expected to adhere to high standards of conduct based on the Christian qualities of unselfishness, justice, and compassion.
Students at the elementary level also benefit from this type of study. The project provides a context for students to apply the skills they have been developing in their various subjects. In addition to integrating many disciplines when studying a topic, the project approach allows the students to use a variety of ways to present their findings. This information can be shared by writing a report or poem, dressing as a book character or person in history, building a diorama, or presenting a poster. Research skills are taught by having the students use books, illustrations, Internet, and primary sources. The project approach method encourages children to incorporate various subject areas, different learning styles and various methods of expressing themselves. They have ownership in their learning.
Students at The Branch School apply this type of learning in different capacities. To see further how we are putting the project approach to use read our newsletter, The Channel, and view the pictures posted in the Gallery. This will give you a feel of how integrated learning is put into action. If you want more information, just Contact Us.
